So, in order to avoid vertical jumps when you switch between different fonts of your family, it is a good idea to synchronize all values across all masters. You may run into problems, however, if these values change between masters. Fortunately, Glyphs does its best to calculate them based on the vertical metrics you enter for each of your masters: ascender, cap height, x-height and descender. Unfortunately, all of these values relate to each other in a pretty complicated way. It must be a problem at the system level rather than the user level.ĭoes anyone have any ideas? I've exhausted all of the solutions I know of.For historical reasons, there are no less than three sets of values that deal with your vertical metrics. I rebooted in safe-mode, logged into my clean admin account, and found that Iowan Old Style doesn't appear in Font Book for that account either. I extracted the ttf files from the ttc file. Nope, that didn't appear in Font Book either. I put a copy of Iowan Old Style.ttc in ~/Library/Fonts/. I trashed all font and Font Book related preferences. I rebooted back to my normal account, and it still did not work. I made sure there were no other copies of Iowan Old Style on my machine. It is using the local font.īut Iowan Old Style does not appear in Font Book or the font-selection window for any application. I created a web page to make sure it was using my local font and not a woff. Iowan Old Style displays properly in documents and web pages. I ran a validation on it, and it is perfectly fine. I also noticed this trick doesn't work in every app (e.g., it works in TextEdit and Scrivener, but not Mail). I discovered that glyph is Capital E on the keyboard with Ornaments checked in the Typography subpanel. Then I hit caps lock and repeated the process. Then I just started pressing every key on the keyboard. I got a clue in another thread, there is a Typography subpanel in the Fonts panel. I read in another thread that Zapfino Glyphs was a separate font that wasn't free, but it didn't seem right that Font Book would show me a character I cannot use. I tried the Copy button, then pasting into various apps, every time it inserted a bullet, even if my font were set to Zapfino where I pasted. Scrolling through Zapfino's repertoire in Font Book, I found a glyph I wanted to use: Hopefully, this explanation will help someone else. Zapfino Ornaments) This isn't so much a question as an answer I found after pulling my hair out, knowing that this *used* to be simple in Mac OS X (bring back Ke圜aps!), but the solution has eluded me until now. I can't tell if there was a problem on versions before Ventura, sorry. I haven't tried adobe as I would never consider to pay for a subscription. I've tried it with so many different fonts (Mac fonts too!!) and apps. This is what happens: It tells me there's nothing selected. I can always see the glyphs, other characters, but I can't change them! But no.Īny ideas on this topic? It really is a reason to switch back to windows as I need easy access to font alternates. I installed a free trial of Typeface, because I thought it might be the font book app itself that causes the problem. I use apps like Pixelmator pro, pages, I even tried textedit. I have a lot of (paid) fonts (otf) and they always worked perfectly fine with windows 10 (every app).īut on my Mac (M1) I can't change the glyphs. I have a huge problem and I need help: I recently switched from Windows to Mac.
